Announcements:
Claremont Water System
Claremont’s new water system is nearly complete. A crew is scheduled to install a pressure relief valve during the first week of May. Barring any unforeseen complications, once that work is complete, the chlorine will then be turned off.
Key persons working to provide us with clean water have worked tirelessly to overcome some formidable, unforeseen challenges along the way. Throughout this effort, the Town has worked with our partners to complete the project without incurring any additional costs to our residents.
We want to thank the people of Claremont for their understanding and patience.
NEWS RELEASE:
Surry County Emergency Management is advising all residents that a complete and total burn ban is now in effect until further notice.
Due to extreme drought conditions, Surry County has been declared a drought disaster locality. Combined with ongoing dry weather and gusty winds, conditions are highly favorable for the rapid spread of brush fires.
This is a full burn ban, meaning:
- No outdoor burning is permitted at any time
- This includes debris burning, trash burning, campfires, fire pits, and any open flames
- The previous allowance for burning after 4:00 PM is no longer in effect
These restrictions are necessary to protect lives, property, and emergency responders. Even small fires can quickly become uncontrollable under current conditions.
Residents are urged to:
- Avoid any activity that could spark a fire (e.g., discarding cigarettes, using equipment that produces sparks)
- Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 911
Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and will notify the public when the burn ban is lifted.
We appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping keep Surry County safe.
